With hair salons closed in many countries during the coronavirus lockdown we are now exploring DIY haircut solutions. Most of us a beginner tackling own hair strand by strand, we are aware that we’re one snip away from a mess-up of an epic proportion. With luck hanging by a hair we can land one of the two outcomes – we can end up with something ok-ish that we accept, or…wait until it grows out and the salons open to cover up our masterpiece.
Put down those kitchen scissors! You really need to think about what tools you will use for the task. Instead of kitchen scissors, you’d want to aim for a good pair of styling shears. The styling shears are razor sharp designed especially for cutting hair. Anyway, whether its styling shears, hair clippers, hair comb, a mirror – think about and prepare what tools and equipment you intend to use.
Control your enthusiasm and cut off less than you think you need to. If you cut too little, you can always take off more, but you cannot stick it back on. Keep in mind also that hair that’s cut wet tends to appear shorted when it dries – this will especially be noticeable if you have longer and wavy or curly hair. If we want to cut straight lines it is particularly useful to wet or dampen the hair before cutting. The point is, be clear about what style or outcome you wish to achieve by cutting your hair and what technique or method you will use to achieve it. Improvising as you go along is risky!
